Retailers Take Note – SC’s e-Verify requirement on hiring in full force

Some South Carolina business owners may not realize they are required to use a federal program to check the legal status of each new hire, and that the edict is now fully enforceable, WSOC-TV reports.

The Palmetto State’s new immigration law took effect Jan. 1, requiring businesses to use the free e-Verify program when adding workers to determine whether they can be legally employed in the United States.

The S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation has been conducting random checks since the law went into effect, but a grace period staved off penalties until it ended July 1
